The presidential elections in the United States carry with them the possibility of changing relations between the country and other areas in the international system. From both supporting and critical perspectives, the new presidency which will begin in 2009 is generating huge expectations, especially in areas such as the Middle East and Latin America. Equally, Europe is also hoping for an improvement in transatlantic relations in the post Bush administration period.

The crisis in Haiti is nothing less than a giant step backwards for the peace stabilisation and consolidation process which began back in 2004. In April, violent disturbances took place throughout Haiti, causing the whole country to grind to a halt, and the Prime Minister was ousted. As Haiti sank deeper into chaos, neither the government nor the United Nations Mission (MINUSTAH) was able to do anything to check the unrest. In this article Amélie Gauthier explores the ongoing economic and political factors that have led to the crisis and asks what can be done to move forwards towards a sustainable solution.

A Working Paper and five Comment articles by FRIDE analysts explore the current situation in the country, focussing on the areas of political reform; the US and NATO policies; and the development of a regional strategy - by the EU and the international community - that takes the future of Pakistan into account. 2008 will be decisive year for Afghanistan.
