Crisis and EU foreign policy / Policy Brief

Post-election Spain must maintain its development commitments

02/11/2011 By Manuel Manrique

Despite the difficult economic situation, a reduced commitment to development from the next Spanish Government would be a strategic mistake. Over the next four years, global debates on development will go “beyond aid” and will involve a greater number of actors in very diverse fora (G-20, EU, OECD-DAC). Spain must respond to these changes with a better integration between development and foreign policy. This will not only improve the quality and effectiveness of Spanish development cooperation, it will also help achieve greater coherence in external action and strengthen Spain's international position.
