Foreign policy has not been a priority of the Zapatero administration. The long diplomatic career of Miguel Ángel Moratinos was not enough to reinforce the role of Spain as a medium power.
Spain’s EU presidency, dominated by the economic crisis and the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, represented an interval of frenetic activity. In the last six years, however, Spain has lost international influence.
The new Foreign Affairs Minister, Trinidad Jiménez, has neither much time nor much room for manoeuvre. FRIDE presents 10 ways in which the new minister must improve Spain’s foreign policy.
