The legislative elections of 26th September 2010 mark the start of a new chapter in Venezuela and could lead to two different scenarios: either a period of further authoritarianism and polarisation, or the decline of Chavism and the emergence of an electoral alternative.

This Policy Brief by Susanne Gratius argues that the elections have reopened a democratic channel for all of the country's political forces. The EU, and especially Spain in its role as main donor to and ally of Venezuela, should monitor this space for dialogue, contribute to the prevention of new political conflicts and help to regain consensus between the two venezuelas.
