Strengthening women's citizenship in the context of state building: Guatemala

This report is the result of research conducted in Guatemala regarding the opportunities to strengthen Guatemalan women’s citizenship. It is part of the ‘Strengthening women’s citizenship in the context of state building’ project, which has the objectives of reporting on and promoting the state building processes in fragile states which work towards improving women’s citizenship. The case studies include Burundi, Colombia, Guatemala, Kosovo and Sierra Leone.

In this report by Magali Quintana and Ileana Alamilla, three areas are analysed: women’s access to justice in the civil sphere, female political participation through political parties and the ways in which the Presidential Secretariat for Women (SEPREM) has fulfilled its mandate. The report also includes lessons learnt and recommendations for international actors and those in charge of formulating policy at country level.
