Southern Africa: state vulnerability and food insecurity

Six countries in Southern Africa (Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho) are suffering a serious food crisis situation.

Due to scarce rainfall last year the maize crop was the poorest in the last ten years. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) forecasts that over 12 million people, at present in a food shortage situation, will die of starvation in the next few months if they do not receive the necessary aid.

This discussion paper reviews the causes and responses to this food insecurity crisis affecting several States.
