Nordic cooperation on foreign and security policy
02/07/2009 By Thorvald Stoltenberg
In this document, Thorvald Stoltenberg, FRIDE trustee, presents some proposals to strengthen Nordic cooperation. The proposals have been designed in such a way as to foster the participation of all Nordic countries.
The author asserts that there is a strong desire in all Nordic countries to strengthen regional cooperation and it is generally considered that, owing to their geographical proximity, Nordic countries share various interests in terms of foreign and security policy, the EU and NATO.
He also points out the shared view that the Nordic region is increasing its importance in geopolitical and strategic terms and that there is a marked interest in expanding the contribution of Nordic forces to UN operations based on current needs and taking into account the comparative advantages of these countries.
