Energy emergency in Kyrgyzstan: causes and Implications

The situation in the energy sectors of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan has been deteriorating, leaving little doubt about the serious repercussions of the energy shortage on local population.
Both countries are heavily dependent on hydro resources and in recent years, the outdated and barely functioning energy infrastructure of these countries has had to face a range of environmental challenges, such as the cycle of dry years and harsh winters.
This EUCAM Policy Brief by Shairbek Juraev, assesses the root causes of the energy crisis in Kyrgyzstan but also asseses it’s implication for the wider region and looks at what role the European Union could play in working with Kyrgyzstan to improve this situation.
