Crunch time on Turkey

This month the European Commission is due to issue its opinion on whether Turkey has met the necessary criteria to open entry negotiations with the European Union.
On the basis of that opinion European leaders will decide at the European Council in December whether to offer Turkey a date for starting talks.
In the event of a positive decision, entry talks are expected to begin some time in the first half of 2005, but most diplomats predict they will last at least a decade.
