Presidential elections in Russia: awaiting new ideas

How will Russian foreign policy evolve in the near future, given that Dmitry Medvedev will become president after the 2 March elections? Georgiy Bovt explores some of the possible implications, especially for relations with Europe, of the post-Putin era.

Perspectives on the evolution of Russia’s foreign policy under Medvedev are not yet clear. Relations with Europe, in particular, seem to have hit a dead end and political leaders must now confront the most complicated situation they have faced since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Medvedev’s personal characteristics, his silence on and the contradictions inherent in the Russian governing elite’s attitude to the West, likewise provoke questions over the future of Euro-Russian relations.
