2005: year zero for world aid and the millennium development goals
01/03/2005 By José Manuel Albares
The year 2005 will be crucial for the mobilisation of donors and recipients to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Ten years are left to reach the different goals. It is, hence, the right time to take stock of the results already obtained and to analyse what can be done to make progress to achieve the MDGs.
Ten years is enough to be on time to the 2015 appointment; however, in order to do it, efforts must be made, without any further delay. For such purposes, the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the OECD, in this year's report, focuses precisely on analysing the level of achievement of the Millennium Goals.
The DAC especially analyses the current amount of Official Development Assistance (ODA) and its forecast for growth in the next years. Likewise, it underscores the importance of combining the increase in ODA with greater efficacy.
The message is clear, to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, it will be necessary to mobilise more resources, more effectively.
