European Union External Democracy Promotion

The topic of external democracy promotion is currently a top priority on both the political and scientific agenda. In the framework of its external governance, the EU exports its view of legitimate democratic governance of nation-states to third countries and acts in turn as an external promoter of democracy.
Within integration theory it is assumed that the EU can be categorized as a value-driven community which represents these values within its external governance. This ascription refers to concepts of democracy, human rights, the rule of law and "good governance".
By focusing on the many countries with either no EU-accession perspective or long-term accession perspective rather than on those under the effect of accession, this volume attempts for the first time to broadly cover the lack of comparative work done to date.
Edited by Annettee Jünemann and Michèle Knodt the book includes chapters by FRIDE researchers Ana Echagüe and Richard Youngs on the Middle East and Susanne Gratius on Latin America.
