The UN mission in Lebanon
25/06/2007 By Amélie Gauthier
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was deployed at the end of August 2006. This article has two objectives: present the mandate, the rules of engagement and composition of the misión; and explain why UNIFIL can defined as a fragile mission.
The Spanish troops attacked in Lebannon the 24th of June 2007 act under UN's mandate, approved by the Security Council and voted in 1978. Resolutions 425 and 426 have three goals: observe and confirm the israeli forces withdraw from the south of Lebanon; restore the peace and international security; and assist the government in the re-establishment of its authority in the territory.
In the context of the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbolah, teh Security Council approved a new resolution, based on the first, with six new functions and new rules for the use of force.
