Brazil: a privileged EU partner

17/07/2007 By Publicaciones FRIDE

In order to recognise its regional and international magnitude as well as its intense bilateral relationships, the European Union has decided to grant Brazil with the status of “strategic partner”.

This was materialised through the First Summit between Brazil and the EU troika held in Lisbon on 4 July, 2007.

On this occasion, both parties agreed, among other things, to intensify their cooperation to strengthen and reform the United Nations, struggle against poverty and inequality, protect the environment, stabilize Latin America and seek for an improved use of alternative energies.

Analysing the outcome of this top-level political bilateral meeting and the consequences of this new relationship between Brazil and Europe at the bilateral, regional and international levels was the aim of the private discussion organised by FRIDE on 12 July, 2007, in Madrid.

The event gathered a group of renowned diplomatic and academic experts from Brazil, other Latin American countries and member States of the EU.
