Survey of European Democracy Promotion Policies 2000-2006
01/05/2006 By Kristina Kausch, David Mathieson, Irene Menendez, Richard Youngs
Against a background of heightened debate over international democratisation, this book provides the most comprehensive survey to date of European democracy promotion policies.
The survey includes case studies of seven European countries - Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom - and of European Union institutions.
The book reveals the extent of European commitments to democracy promotion around the world, the resources invested in this area of policy, and the way that approaches to encouraging political reform have evolved in recent years.
It also highlights instances where European policies have either eschewed any notable support for democratic change or expressly acted to democracy's disadvantage.
The survey aims to provide easily accessible information on different donors' political reform acitivities, in a way that can enhance both analytical and policy-related debates over Europe's approach to democracy and human rights.
