The new six year term in Mexico and its (un) strategic relationship with the EU

Mexico was the first Latin American country to sign a free trade agreement with the EU and simultaneously considered a ‘strategic’ partner of the Union. Despite this comparative advantage, relations lack dynamism and the UE is not a priority for the new government of Enrique Peña Nieto. Nevertheless, in the future, the EU could be an important ally for Mexico in its battle against drug related violence stemming from drug trafficking and consumption.
