Declaración de principios de ECFR

Nosotros, los abajo firmantes, hacemos un llamamiento a los gobiernos de la Unión Europea para que desarrollen una política exterior más coherente y firme, inspirada en nuestros valores compartidos, dedicada a la consecución de nuestros intereses comunes y respaldada por el poder de Europa.

Por ello, proclamamos los siguientes principios:

1. Al enfrentarse a las grandes potencias de hoy y a los gigantes emergentes del mañana, los países europeos, considerados individualmente, perciben el mundo más allá de su control. Pero si hablara con una sola voz, la Unión Europea podría contribuir a configurar el orden mundial.

2. Sólo actuando conjuntamente podrán los Estados miembros de la Unión Europea lograr sus objetivos comunes, desde la lucha contra el cambio climático a la reducción de la pobreza, desde la defensa de los derechos humanos y la prevención del genocidio a la necesidad de hacer frente a la proliferación de armas letales y las causas del extremismo violento.

3. La política exterior de la Unión Europea debería estar respaldada por sus recursos económicos, políticos, culturares e incluso, en última instancia, por su poder militar. Nuestro compromiso en favor de unas instituciones multilaterales fuertes y eficaces debe ir acompañado por un esfuerzo decidido para lograr una mayor influencia en ellas.

4. El mejor modo de asegurar la paz y la prosperidad es cumplir las promesas de adhesión con aquellos países vecinos que aspiran a ser miembros de la Unión Europea, así como promover las reformas políticas mediante oportunidades de cooperación política e incentivos económicos más generosos.

5. El poder transformador europeo puede llegar más allá de su vecindad inmediata. La Unión Europea debe aprovechar su posición como mayor mercado común del mundo y principal donante de ayuda al desarrollo para promover los valores en los que creemos, tanto en otras partes del mundo como en las instituciones multilaterales.

Todos los europeos se beneficiarán al tener una voz más fuerte en el mundo y el mundo se beneficiará al contar con una Unión Europea más fuerte.
