Captive Institutions

Flacso-Chile
What do Chileans think of the Armed Forces since the arrival of democracy and the death of Augusto Pinochet? This is one of the questions which is tackled by “Captive Institutions: Public Opinion and the new social legitimacy of the armed forces”, a book just published by FLASCO Chile, written by Augusto Varas Fernández (Associate Researcher at FRIDE), Claudio Fuentes Saavedra and Felipe Agüero Piwonka.

Following two opinion polls, one taken at the start of transition and another a few months after the death of Pinochet, the authors analyse comparatively public perceptions of key aspects of civil military relations: the functions that the armed forces must carry out, how they are seen as political actors, the subject of Human Rights and the perceptions of the threat of neighbouring countries, amongst others.
