Vicepresidente y Director Ejecutivo de la Gorbachev Foundation of North America (GFNA). Catedrático de Sociología y Antropología, desde 1993, de la Universidad de Northeastern. Doctor en Sociología, por la Universidad de Princeton, su interés se centra en el estudio de las sociedades post socialistas, en especial por la rusa.

Actualmente, investiga sobre temas educativos y desarrollo económico. Es también Fellow del Centro de Investigación Ruso de la Universidad de Harvard, editor de varias revistas y miembro de Comité Ejecutivo del Club de Madrid.

Ha publicado Koops: The Rebirth of Entrepreneurship in the Soviet Union (con W.
