Barnett R. Rubin es también vicepresidente del Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum, miembro del Comité Directivo de Human Rights Watch/ Europa y Asia Central, del Consejo Ejecutivo de Human Rights Watch/ Asia, del Consejo del Proyecto Eurasia Central del Open Society Institute, del Consejo Científico de la Fundación Médicos sin Fronteras, y del Consejo de la Liga Internacional para los Derechos Humanos.
Es autor, coautor y editor de varios libros, incluyendo: Blood on the Doorstep: the Politics of Preventing Violent Conflict (2002); The Fragmentation of Afghanistan: State Formation and Collapse in the International System (2002, 1ª edición 1995), Post-Soviet Political Order: Conflict and State Building (1998) y The Search for Peace in Afghanistan: From Buffer State to Failed State (1995).
