President and Founder of Fundación Los Santos de Maimona. Former Advisor to the Commission of the United Nations of Legal Empowerment of the Poor. Founding Member and Senior Fellow of the Gorbachev Foundation of North America. Member of the Advisory Committee of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. Member of the Board of Directors of PRISA, which includes among others, El País. Member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. Member of the Board of the Kofi Annan Foundation. Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Sciences.

Invested Doctor honoris causa by the Northeastern University in Boston in June 2001. Awarded with the Great Cross of the Order of Civilian Merit, Spain, 2002. Raymond Georis Price 2008 for Innovative Philanthropy in Europe. He was the 2009 winner of the Commitment to Development “Ideas in Action” Award, sponsored jointly by the Center for Global Development (CGD) and Foreign Policy magazine.

As well as publishing numerous articles throughout his professional career, he has also written the following books: Europa, Globalización y Unión Monetaria (Siddharth Mehta, 1998), and El futuro de España (1996), which was on the list of the top ten selling books in Spain for 23 weeks.
