Francis Maertens

Director, Division for Operations, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

In February 2008, Mr. Francis Maertens became the Director, Division for Operations, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). In his functions as Director, Mr. Maertens supervises a global network of representation and programme offices in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe specialized in the provision of technical assistance in the prevention and fight against drug trafficking and drug abuse; transnational organized crime, corruption and terrorism.

Currently Mr. Maertens is leading an internal and operational reform based in the preparation of regional and thematic programmes and in an efficient resource mobilization with the objective of maximizing the operational efficiency of UNODC thus multiplying services targeting priority regions.

Mr. Maertens has served the United Nations system for over 25 years. Formerly, Director of the Division for Public Affairs. In such function, he lead research activities as well as strategies and operational guidelines of the Office, coupled with the management of external affairs, co-funding and partnerships with UN sister agencies, the public as well as the private sectors. He also lead the work of the Independent Evaluation Unit of UNODC.
