Nilüfer Narli

Professor Nilüfer Narli is chair of the Sociology Department at Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul, Turkey. Her main research area is in the social and cultural field, more specifically on Islamist movements, gender issues, migration, civil-military relations, media and conflict.

Nilüfer Narli fulfilled a professorship at Marmara University where she was founding chair of the Sociology Department as well as chairing the Sociology and Anthropology Department of the Middle East Studies Institute and she founded the Faculty of Communication at Kadir Has University, both in Istanbul.

In addition to fellowships in the United States, Professor Narli’s academic-institutional partnerships have spanned the European Union. In working with other institutes her research efforts have addressed such issues as the role of Islamist women in political parties in Turkey with the EU Commission and civil-military relations and transparency-building in defence budgeting in cooperation with the Centre for European Security Studies in the Netherlands.

Other notable partnerships have included working with the Centre for Turkish Studies, Essen University in Germany, the Paris-based National Centre for Scientific Research, the French Anatolian Institute, UNESCO and Sweden’s Uppsala University.
