Augusto Varas Fernández, is an Associate Researcher with la Fundación para las Relaciones Internacionales y Diálogo Exterior (FRIDE). He holds a Degree in Sociology from Universidad Católica de Chile and a Masters and Doctorate in Sociology from Washington University (St Louis), in the United States.
In the course of his career he has been the Director of the Department of the Sociology of Development in the Instiute of Sociology, Universidad Católica de Chile, a post from which he was exonerated after the military coup. During the dictatorship he was a professor and researcher in the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLASCO-Chile) and Director of the International and Military Relations Area.
After having been Director of the Democratic Governability and Citizenship Programme at the Ford Foundation for the Andean Region and the Southern Cone, he became the head of this regional office.
Author of more than 20 books and numerous articles on international relations and security, armed forces, democracy and other issues of internacional politics. Along with other researchers he published "Captive Institutions: Public Opinion and Social Legitimacy of the Armed Forces" (Published by FLACSO-Catalonia: Chile 2007)
He is currently the President of the Directorate of Fundación Equitas (Chile).
