Jessica Almqvist

PhD in Law from the European University Institute, Florence, Italy (2002) and LL.M. in International Law and Cand. Jur. from the University of Lund, Sweden (1993). She has also studied Law and Political Science at UC Berkeley Department of Political Science (Graduate Exchange Student, 1994-95) and Columbia University School of Law (Visiting Fellow, 1998-99).

From 2002 to 2004, Jessica Almqvist was Research Associate at the Project on International Courts and Tribunals, Centre on International Cooperation, New York University. She was also Adjunct Professor at the Department of Social Sciences, New School University, New York. Prior to her PhD studies, Jessica Almqvist worked at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Lund, Sweden, as Publications Officer and Research Assistant (1992-1996). During this period, she was also Editorial Assistant for the Nordic Journal of International Law.

Jessica Almqvist has worked on several topics, including international law, international justice, and human rights.

Dr. Almqvist is the author of the book "Human Rights, Culture and the Rule of Law" (Hart Publishers, Oxford, 2005) and co-editor of "The Human Rights Council: Challenges and Opportunities" (FRIDE 2006).

She has also published various articles and chapters in edited books, such as “The Accessibility of European Integration Courts from an NGO Perspective” in: Tullio Treves et al (eds), Civil Society, International Tribunals and Compliance Bodies (Cambridge University Press, 2004); “Freedom from Fear in the International Judicial Process”, New York Journal of Human Rights (Spring 2004); “The Impact of Cultural Diversity on International Criminal Proceedings”, Journal of International Criminal Justice, no. 2 (Spring 2006); “¿Y Las Víctimas?”, Foreign Policy Edición Española (June/July 2006).
