Clare Castillejo

Senior researcher and research coordinator

Clare Castillejo is a senior researcher and research coordinator at FRIDE. Prior to joining FRIDE, Clare worked as a Social Development Adviser with the UK Department for International Development (DFID), as a researcher with Amnesty International, and as a Human Rights Specialist with UNDP. Clare has also worked as a researcher with the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and with the South Asia Human Rights Group. Clare has worked extensively in developing countries. She was based for four years in South Asia and has conducted research in West Africa, Southern Africa and China. She has a BA in Social Anthropology from the University of Sussex and an MA in Anthropology of Development from SOAS.

Her research focuses on governance and rights in fragile state contexts and she is currently leading a multi-country research project on international support for state building. Her recent publications include ‘Sri Lanka: The failure of EU human rights sanctions’ (FRIDE, January 2010) Women’s political participation and influence in Sierra Leone’ (FRIDE, June 2009) and ‘Building accountable justice in Sierra Leone’ (FRIDE, January 2009).
