Ernesto Zedillo
Former President of Mexico (1994 - 2000)

Born in Mexico D.F., on December 27th, 1951.
Ernesto Zedillo assumed the commitment of carrying out a profound judicial reform, fight against poverty, stop centralism, build a better-balanced presidential regime and strive to achieve an electoral reform in order to permit people gain access to a more equal regime. His message proved that Ernesto Zedillo is a politician who raises great expectation. His social consciousness derives from his personal history and becomes a hope for our present history.
In 1969, he began his education at the Superior School of Economy at the National Polytechnic Institute and, at the same time, he started to work as assistant auditor for the National Bank of Army and Navy, a job which allowed him to count on enough sources to continue his professional studies.
Ernesto Zedillo’s education derived from his academic dedication and from very valuable work experiences. A decisive moment during his career took place when he joined Economic and Political Management of the Office of the Presidency in January 1971, when Leopoldo Solis, the prominent economist was Managing Director. His concern for a deeper knowledge of the economy derives from this period, once he understood its importance regarding national policy planning. Meanwhile, he participated in different activities at the Institute for Political, Economic and Social Studies, (IEPES) of the PRI, where Leopoldo Solis was acting Assistant Manager.
After completing his third year of professional education, Ernesto Zedillo decided to take exams on subjects corresponding to the final years to qualify for a university degree, and therefore in June, 1972, he graduated as Economist. Shortly after, he started to teach macroeconomics. Figuring in his first group was Nilda Patricia Velasco, whom he married afterwards, forming a family of five children: Ernesto, Emiliano, Carlos, Nilda Patricia and Rodrigo. In 1973, he received a scholarship to take a course on “Evaluation of Projects in Human Capital”, in Bradford, England. One Year later, the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), supported him to continue his master’s degree and PhD in economics at Yale University in the United States of America. His doctoral thesis, “Public External Debt in Mexico; recent history and optimal future development linked to petroleum”, underlined the risks within financing the economy growth of Mexico with public external debt and hydrocarbon mono-exportation. He also underlined the need for an efficient link of the country’s economy with international finance, commercial flows and to reorganize public finance as a base for the country’s macro-economic health.
