Over the last ten years more than 50 wars have been brought to an end, but the problems experienced by the societies involved are far from over. There are great needs and great expectations.

Those countries that have left war behind, and those that cooperate with them, face the challenges of creating jobs, building and repairing infrastructure, maintaining peace between the various parties and establishing judicial systems in order to manage relationships between individuals and interests groups, while also building the necessary trust between the state and citizens.

When wars come to an end, it is attempted to make the reconstruction of infrastructure and reconciliation between actors in the conflict go hand-in-hand with the creation of a democratic, just and universal system. Peace, development and respect for human rights form an essential triangle. People want to leave the past behind, but fear, suspicion and the need for justice continue to figure prominently in the minds of those involved in the war.

The International Cooperation Programme of Fundacion “La Caixa”, in collaboration with FRIDE, is organising these seminars with the aim of promoting reflection on the protection of human rights in post-conflict situations, dilemmas about justice and peace, and the role that can be played by international cooperation.

All of the seminars will conclude with a showing of the documentary “Rwanda: The Hills Speak”*, by Bernard Bellefroid.
