Peacebuilding is a concept and practice that has become a significant part of policies towards so-called states in crisis, fragile states or post-conflict states.
The concept of human security has also evolved alongside that of peacebuilding. The idea of human security stems from two origins: on the one hand, from studies promoted in the 1980s by the United Nations Development Programme on human development and the variables that strengthen or weaken it; and on the other hand, from critical perspectives on the traditional concept of security which is based on state protection achieved primarily through armed forces and deterrence mechanisms.
This seminar will explore both concepts, discuss their adoption in Spanish and EU policies, analyse the role of governments and non-governmental organisations and propose ideas to link the areas of peace and development.
