From the 29th of May to the 1st of June 2008, in Antigua (Guatemala), FRIDE, DARA, Project on Justice in Times of Transition ( PJTT ) and the Institute for Global Leadership (IGL) at the University of Tufts co-organised the event "The civic commitment of Central American Youth". It was attended by a group of young leaders from Central America, accompanied by intra and extraregional mentors.
During five days of intese work divided along thematic axes - violence, civic participation and risk reduction en natural disasters - participants had the opportunity to exchange their experiences and develop future plans of action.
The objective is to create a space where young Central American leaders can develop recommendations to promote civic participation and positive leadership amongst Central American youth.
As part of the activities, attendees participated in a voluntary project in collaboration with the organisation HELPS International, which gave them the opportunity to co-operate with members of the community in the construction of "smoke free" firewood stoves for local families.
