Energy - A reinforced obstacle to democracy
Hotel Vincci SohoMadrid, Spain 23/05/2008
Description
The seminar "Energy – A Reinforced Obstacle to Democracy" will be held on the 23rd of May 2008.
This meeting will be divided into different segments looking at global trends in the energy security and its effect upon democracy, comparing US and European approaches to democracy promotion in energy rich countries and analysing the experiences of Angola, Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia.
The event will be a closed meeting bringing together American and European experts on democracy promotion in debates on energy security, exploring their perspectives on this area of geopolitics.
Many observers and practitioners express the concern that both American and European energy security strategies risk cutting across support for democracy and human rights in producer states. This seminar will assess whether this concern is valid; and to the extent that it is valid, how it should be addressed.
