On 16 February, FRIDE and the EU-Asia Centre, in cooperation with the Japanese mission to the EU, organised in Brussels an “EU-Japan Expert Roundtable on East Asia Security”.
A new leader in a poverty-stricken and nuclear armed North Korea, territorial claims in the South China Sea, the prospects for future relations between China and its neighbours (especially Japan), the two Koreas, and Taiwan are just some of the current issues that could affect the security situation in East Asia.
During the event, over 50 participants from the EEAS, various diplomatic missions and think tanks based in Brussels discussed the relevance of the EU’s guidelines on East Asia security, as well as Japan's views and aims regarding the region.
