International organisations' response to the Darfur crisis
Casa de GaliciaMadrid, Spain 09/04/2008
Description
FRIDE has significant previous experience with regard to peace operations and North-South cooperation. It is also very interested in promoting debate on the current missions among experts, UN representatives and regional organisations like the African Union and the European Union.
Research on peace missions has centred on the latest developments in the operations in Haiti, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Ivory Coast, as well as the integrated missions. At the same time, FRIDE is also investigating the role of emerging powers, in particular India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA), in regional and international security.
In the case of Darfur, FRIDE would like to delve deeper into the role of South Africa and the African Union in the hybrid mission (UN / AU) and the promotion of peace in Sudan/Darfur.
The staging of this seminar is part of the “International Responses to the Crisis of the State” project, which is being developed by FRIDE’s Peace and Security programme. The objective of this project is to impact policy-makers and NGOs in the international community in order that they reorientate and improve their policies with regard to states in crisis.
It is hoped to thereby contribute to the socioeconomic welfare of these states and the defence of human rights and basic liberties in fragile or crisis-stricken states.
