Increased EU engagement with Ukraine is pressing (Natalia Shapovalova, EUObserver)

Ukraine’s democratic future is uncertain, particularly after the imprisonment of opposition leader and former prime minister, Yulia Timoshenko, and the restricted participation of the opposition in the 2012 parliamentary elections. The changes recently introduced in the electoral system are seen to favor the big parties. The EU should change its strategy for the eastern neighborhood to include also the civil society, businesses and local governments.
